The ERAM University School of Arts – UdG is proud to be a part of the Tàpies Year celebrations, marking the centenary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Marking the Centenary: Antoni Tàpies Foundation Unveils Year-Long Program
On the occasion of the centenary of Antoni Tàpies’ birth, the foundation that bears his name is launching a program of exhibitions, publications, and diverse activities to celebrate “Tàpies Year” under the motto “Tàpies Lives. Long Live Tàpies.” The ERAM University School of Arts – UdG is joining the centenary celebrations by collaborating directly on the opening ceremony. During the event, a team of students and teachers from the Degree in Audiovisual Communication and Multimedia will be responsible for recording the entire event. The events begin today and will run for a year, until December 13, 2024. In this way, the foundation aims to reaffirm the relevance of the legacy of the painter, one of the most outstanding of the 20th century, with new perspectives and interpretations. Public figures from different generations and fields will participate, such as filmmaker Albert Serra, cultural journalist Rita Roig, and influencer Juliana Canet.
At the same time, to project the Antoni Tàpies Foundation as an open space for art and thought, they are working together with the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the Suñol Foundation, and the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation, among other entities. Throughout this year, the figure and work of Antoni Tàpies will be disseminated on a national and international scale, delving into various aspects, both plastic and social and political commitment.
A Centenary, Four Exhibition Projects
For the tribute, the foundation will produce four exhibition projects: “The Japanese Footprint,” directed by Núria Homs, will focus on the influence that some Japanese monks of the 18th and 19th centuries had on the artist’s work; the exhibition “A = A, B = B,” coordinated by the artist and scientist Pep Vidal, takes Tàpies as a starting point for reflecting on the connections between art and science; the exhibition “Sengai” is being negotiated with the Idemitsu Museum of Art in Tokyo with the aim of presenting paintings and calligraphy by the Japanese Buddhist monk Sengai (1750-1837); and the exhibition “Antoni Tàpies. Retrospective [working title],” a retrospective dedicated to the work of Antoni Tàpies, directed by Manuel Borja-Villel and co-produced by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) and the Antoni Tàpies Foundation.
Once again, the ERAM University School of Arts – UdG joins forces with initiatives that are sensitive to our values to bring art and culture closer to our students.
